Md. Alomgir Molla :
Authorities in Kaliganj have fined five shopkeepers for failing to display price lists amid efforts to regulate the market during the holy month of Ramadan. The mobile court, led by Executive Magistrate Nuri Tasmin Urmi, conducted the operation at Aorakhali Bazar in Jangalia Union on Wednesday afternoon.
The Violation and Fines :
The five shopkeepers—Dipu Chandra Pal, Md. Hashem, Md. Halim, Atikur Rahman, and Nazrul Islam—were found violating Section 38 of the Consumer Rights Protection Act, 2009, by not displaying price lists of essential commodities. Each of them was fined BDT 2,000, totaling BDT 10,000.
Speaking on the matter, Executive Magistrate Nuri Tasmin Urmi stated, “This campaign will continue throughout Ramadan to ensure price stability and consumer rights.”
Background: Market Monitoring During Ramadan :
During Ramadan, markets across Bangladesh often experience price hikes and the sale of substandard or adulterated food products. To prevent such malpractice, authorities conduct regular inspections.
In Ramadan 2023, authorities in Dhaka and other cities launched crackdowns on businesses violating pricing and hygiene regulations.
In 2022, the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority and the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection conducted joint operations at major markets, including Karwan Bazar in Dhaka and Reazuddin Bazar in Chattogram.
In 2021, the Ministry of Commerce and local administrations introduced monitoring teams to control sudden price surges before Ramadan.
A Step Towards Consumer Protection :
The ongoing inspections highlight the government’s commitment to protecting consumers and ensuring fair market practices. However, experts emphasize that sustained monitoring, business awareness, and stricter enforcement of regulations are necessary for long-term market stability.
