Major Fire Incidents in Dhaka: Karail Slum and Khilgaon Taltola Affected

Jahid:

– A devastating fire broke out early today at the capital’s Karail slum, destroying 61 shanties and leaving many families homeless.

According to Nazrul Islam, sub-officer of the Fire Service and Civil Defence, the fire started from a kitchen stove at 12:44 am and spread rapidly. Ten fire-fighting units rushed to the scene and managed to bring the blaze under control by 1:35 am, after nearly an hour of intense efforts. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, but the estimated damage is around Tk 10 lakh.

Another Fire in Khilgaon’s Taltola

In a separate incident on Friday evening, a massive fire broke out at Taltola, Khilgaon, gutting at least 20 shops, mostly garages, along with two sawmills.

The fire started around 7:30 pm, and nine fire-fighting engines battled the flames until they managed to bring the situation under control at 9:35 pm. Authorities suspect that the fire spread quickly due to a chemical drum explosion. No casualties were reported in this incident either.

Both fires highlight the urgent need for improved fire safety measures, particularly in densely populated slum areas and commercial zones handling flammable materials. Fire Service officials are investigating the causes and assessing further safety precautions to prevent such incidents in the future.
