Police have arrested Mariyam Mukaddas Misti, a self-proclaimed coordinator of the “Anti-Discrimination Student Movement,” in connection with the alleged occupation, vandalism, and extortion attempt involving the residence of former MP and Awami League leader Joaherul Islam in Tangail.
She was arrested on Sunday night (March 9) from the West Akur-Takurpara area of Tangail town, confirmed Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tanvir Ahmed of Tangail Sadar Police Station.
Misti, a resident of a rented house in Tangail town, hails from Dohar Joshihati village in Fulki Union, Basail upazila.
Allegations of House Occupation and Extortion
According to reports, on Saturday morning (March 8), Misti, along with 20 mentally challenged individuals, broke into the six-story house of former MP Joaherul Islam in Chhoto Kalibari, claiming control over the property. The incident sparked widespread criticism across Tangail. Later that night, joint security forces intervened and cleared the property.
Roushan Ara Khan, the wife of Joaherul Islam, alleged, “Misti initially demanded Tk 10 crore from me. When I refused, she forcibly occupied our house. I have filed a case, and I demand justice.”
Investigation and Response :
Following the incident, Roushan Ara Khan filed a case against Misti at Tangail Sadar Police Station, leading to her arrest.
Meanwhile, leaders of the “Anti-Discrimination Student Movement” distanced themselves from Misti, stating that they had no connection to her actions. They called for legal action against those involved in illegal land occupation and extortion.
